The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"He who recites three times every morning and evening:

`Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma`as-mihi shai'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i, wa Huwas-Sami`ul-`Alim

(In the Name of Allah with Whose Name there is protection against every kind of harm in the earth or in the heaven, and He is the All-Hearing and All-Knowing),' 

nothing will harm him.''

*REMINDER:* whenever we read the names of Allah we should also make dua to Him..... Cause it's like calling out His name, getting His attention but then not asking him for anything..... He is the one who LOVES to give, yet we get stingy in asking....

An essential of making dua is not to only ask for what we feel is achievable, but also to ask for what we feel is impossible...... Cause there is no limit to Allah's bounties....

We shouldn't put a cap on our duas..... Let them soar .... Cause Allah responds to ALL duas in one of these 3 ways

Also if we feel our duas are not being accepted, it is recommended in Ahadith & by scholars to increase istagfar

Importance of the Knowledge of  The 99 Names of Allah

Message # 15

*Hadith on 99 names of Allah*

Hadith  _"Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one. Whoever *ahsaha* will enter Paradise."_  (Recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The word *Ahsaha* in the hadith, is commonly found to be translated as memorizes, that is not a true translation. For one thing to memorize we should know the exact 99. But in the Hadith while Rasulallah (SAW) mentioned that "AlIah 99 Names" He never told which ones are THE 99. How can we memorize 99 Names to enter Paradise when we don't know which ones are the exact 99 ?

Therefore we must look at the much deeper meaning of "Ahsaha"

*Ahsaha* actually has 3 components in it:
1. knows, ponders and understand their meanings,
2. invokes to Allah by using them to make dua, Praise & worship Him
3. and acts by them according to one's belief in them


It can be seen here that understanding the meaning of the word *ahsaha* is crucial to the correct understanding of the Hadith

*So then what about the 99 Names list we know of ?*

As mentioned earlier, Allah has infinite names, all of which are beautiful and Best. Out of those infinite are 99 to be found in Quran and Hadith, which are the *Best of the Best*


The list most commonly found is just an estimated guess, infact not all scholars agree upon them. Which makes our endeavor to know and understand even more important, noble and crucial to raise the quality of our Ibadah.

Message # 17

*Calling upon Allah using His Perfect Names*

As Allah says in the Quran in *Surah Al A'raf 7:180*

وَلِلّهِ الأَسْمَاء الْحُسْنَى فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا
And to Allah belong the Best Names, so invoke Him by them.

*Surah Ghafir 40:60*

وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you."

*Ibn Al Qayyim* said: Making Supplication Allah's name has 2 levels:
🔆 *Supplication of Praise and Worship* (i.e. Glorify and Praise Allah frequently through Adhkar taught us by our dear Prophet Muhammad (SAW)  He doesn't need it, but He is Pleased with it. Because, when we Praise Him we are worshiping Him)
🔆 *Supplication of Requesting and Asking* (When people ask too many favors from us we don't like it, But Allah loves to be asked favors or requests from. He waits for us to ask Him for our needs, wishes and desires)

*Number 1 Eemaan Booster*
Scholars say, there is no science that causes an increase in Eeman as much as the knowledge of the Names of Allah.

For us Eemaan may increase in many different ways, BUT the fastest and quickest way to boost Eemaan, (like high dose medicine for instant relief  is the Knowledge of Allah.....

How can we *Worship Allah* if we don't know who Allah is?
How can we *Love Allah* if we don't know who Allah is ?
How can we *Fear Allah* if we don't know who Allah is ?
How can we *put our trust in Allah* if we don't know who Allah is ?


*To Know, Recognize and Understand the Magnificence and Power of Allah is a Central tenant of Eeman & Tawheed.*

*Knowledge of the Names and Attributes of Allah leads to a type of:*
 _Consciousness  &  Humilty_ in us.

Every name and every attribute causes us to increase our Eemaan in a different way & Allah will give us what we ask for IF WE ASK HIM USING HIS APPROPRIATE NAME & ATTRIBUTE

*Al Jabbar* _The Restorer_ Will fill up any weaknesses we may have

*An Nur* _The Light_ Will Fill our heart with the Nur of Eemaan

*Al Basit* _The Expander & The Reliever_ Will Open the way for us give us what we need in abundance

*Al Wahhab* _The Constant Giver of Gifts_ Will keep giving us what we don't expect and don't deserve

*As Sami'* _The All Hearing_ Who waits for us to call on Him & Will Hear us whenever we reach out to Him


*Al Fattah* _The Openner_ Will Open all barriers and closed doors for us

*Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem*

The study of the names of Allah is one of the most sciences and knowledge. It is in fact the central tenant of our belief, because the nobility of the science is proportional to the Majesty of the object of study our Lord Allah.

May *Al Muiz* (The One who Bestows Honor) honor us through this, for learning the names of Allah is the most honored of all sciences


Message # 7

*Asma ul Husna*

The word *Asma* is the plural of the word Ism which means Name

*Husna* means *Excellent* , *Most Perfect* .... the *Best of the Best*

Who else other than Allah is worthy of *Excellent and Perfect* names

_Allahu Akbar_


Message # 10

*How many Names does Allah Subhana wa ta'Allah have ?*

The 99 Names of Allah list we usually see, was actually the first attempt to compile them though Quran and Sunnah based on a hadith.

These are by  no means the only names Allah has...One scholar has also listed upto 150 names and one even 500......

In actuality Allah has infinite names:

❣Some that only the angels know
❣Some that Allah has mentioned in the Quran and we find in Hadith
❣Others only Allah knows, it's part of the Ilm ul Ghaib (Knowledge of the Unseen)

Yet from the ones we know there is nothing that you can think of that there isn't an appropriate name of Allah for it, whether to Praise & Exalt Him,  to call upon for Help and Guidance, to ask for Mercy and Forgiveness and so much more.

*Knowledge of the Names of Allah is the basis for all other knowledge*
as Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: _"Knowledge of the Most Beautiful Names of Allah is the basis of all other kinds of knowledge, for the objects of all these other branches of knowledge were either created or commanded by Him (the various branches of knowledge either deal with objects created by Him or with the laws and guidance revealed by Him). The reason for creation and guidance is found in His Most Beautiful Names (because He is the Creator, He creates things; because He is the Guide to the Straight Path, He reveals guidance, and so on)… Knowing the Most Beautiful Names is the basis of all objects of knowledge, because all knowledge stems from these Names…"_ (Bada'i' al-Fawaa'id by Ibn al-Qayyim, 1/163)

*Allah mentions His names and their Significance in the Quran*

*Ta-Ha 20:8*
اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ لَهُ الْأَسْمَاء الْحُسْنَى
Allah! None has the right to be worshiped but He! To Him belong the Best Names.

*Al-A'raf (The Heights) 7:180*
وَلِلّهِ الأَسْمَاء الْحُسْنَى فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا وَذَرُواْ الَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِي أَسْمَآئِهِ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ
And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.

*Al-Isra (The Journey by Night)* 17:110
قُلِ ادْعُواْ اللّهَ أَوِ ادْعُواْ الرَّحْمَـنَ أَيًّا مَّا تَدْعُواْ فَلَهُ الأَسْمَاء الْحُسْنَى

Say, "Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names."


Message # 13

*Mention of various Magnificent Names of Allah in the Quran*

Allah says Walillahul Asma ul Husna in Quran 4 times. *Husna* is the feminine of *Ahsan* which means *Most Perfect* , *The Best*
Every few Ayahs Allah mentions, Certain names of His throughout the Quran. Sometimes in pairs, usually at the end of Ayahs eg As Sami ul Aleem , Ghafoor ur Raheem, Sameeum Baseer

*Suggestion* : lets list out the names of Allah we we find in our recitations and note why Allah has used particular names in certain ayahs and what is their Significance

*Most Significant are the Ayahs of Surah Hashr*

*Al-Hashr (The Gathering) 59:22*
هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ هُوَ الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ
He is Allah , other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

*Al-Hashr (The Gathering) 59:23*
هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْمَلِكُ الْقُدُّوسُ السَّلَامُ الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمُهَيْمِنُ الْعَزِيزُ الْجَبَّارُ الْمُتَكَبِّرُ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
He is Allah , other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.

*Al-Hashr (The Gathering) 59:24*
هُوَ اللَّهُ الْخَالِقُ الْبَارِئُ الْمُصَوِّرُ لَهُ الْأَسْمَاء الْحُسْنَى يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ

He is Allah , the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

*Hadith regarding Allah's known and unknown Names in a dua for anxiety and grief*

 It was reported from 'Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood (R) that the Prophet (SAW) said:

*No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and says:*

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ، ابْنُ عَبْدِكَ، ابْنُ أَمَتِكَ، نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ، أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ، أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ، أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ، أَوِ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ، أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي، وَنُورَ صَدْرِي، وَجَلَاءَ حُزْنِي، وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي))([1]).

"Allaahumma innee 'abduka wa ibn 'abdika wa ibn amatika, naasiyati bi yadika, maadin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa’uka, as’aluka bi kulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka aw anzaltahu fi kitaabika aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika aw ista’tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'andak an taj’ala al-Qur’aana rabee’ qalbi wa noor sadri wa jalaa’a huzni wa dhahaaba hammi."

"O Allaah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every Name belonging to You which You named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur’aan the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety."

"...but Allaah will take away his sorrow and grief, and give him in their stead joy."
